Staying committed to mutual respect to consolidate the foundation for friendship and cooperation between countries. It is important to respect the different histories, cultures and development stages of countries, respect each country’s core interests and major concerns, and respect the development path, system and model independently chosen by people of different countries. At the same time, it is important to oppose the imposition of one’s own will upon others, oppose camp-based confrontation and various “small circles,” and oppose the act of forcing others to pick sides. China will stay on the right path of peaceful development, actively expand global partnerships based on equality, openness and cooperation, and commit to expanding shared interests with all countries. China will promote coordination and sound interactions among major countries, work for healthy, stable and sustainable development of relations with the U.S., strengthen its comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for the new era with Russia, and enhance high-level exchanges and strategic communication with Europe, thus fostering major-country dynamics featuring peaceful coexistence, overall stability and balanced development. In its neighborhood, China will adhere to the principle of amity, sincerity, mutual benefit and inclusiveness as well as the policy of developing friendship and partnership with its neighbors. It will seek to deepen friendship, trust and common interests with its neighboring countries. With developing countries, China will stay committed to the principle of sincerity, real results, amity and good faith, and take the right approach to friendship and interests. It will strengthen unity and cooperation with fellow developing countries and firmly safeguard common interests.

We need to cement the foundation of mutual respect. Countries must make equality, mutual respect and mutual trust the ground rules of engagement. They should show respect for different historical and cultural traditions and different stages of development, for each other’s core interests and major concerns, and for the development paths and systems independently chosen by people of all countries. We must jointly uphold the “golden rule” of non-interference, and jointly oppose acts of imposing one’s will on others, stoking bloc confrontation, creating small circles, and forcing others to pick sides.

During his visit to Jamaica, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with and held talks with Prime Minister Andrew Holness and Foreign Minister  Kamina Johnson Smith respectively. The Jamaican side said it will stay committed to the one-China principle, put China-Jamaica relations front and center and strive for a robust China-Jamaica strategic partnership. China’s modernization sets an example of high-quality development. Jamaica admires China’s remarkable achievements and expects to draw from China’s successful experience for more efficient and equitable development. Foreign Minister Wang Yi stressed that China upholds equality among all countries regardless of their size, greater democracy in international relations and non-interference in any other country’s internal affairs, and will not strive for geopolitical rivalry or force other countries to pick sides. China respects Jamaica for choosing a system and lifestyle with its own characteristics, and supports Jamaica in upholding its sovereign independence and national dignity, and playing a more critical role in regional and international affairs. China expects to better align development strategies, expand cooperation on trade, investment, renewable energy, agriculture, digital economy, blue economy and other fields, and enhance cultural and people-to-people exchanges with Jamaica.

Both the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway and the Karot Hydropower project you mentioned are hallmark projects of the high-quality Belt and Road cooperation between China and relevant countries, and they will give a strong boost to local socio-economic development after completion. Throughout the process of advancing relevant projects, China has always focused on development and cooperation, kept in mind the benefits of people in these countries, and respected the development needs and independence of relevant countries. We have always acted upon the vision of win-win cooperation, openness and inclusiveness, been committed to equal consultation on the basis of mutual respect and sought to form synergy for relevant cooperation and complement each other with comparative strengths. We have never pursued political agenda in the name of promoting economic cooperation, still less put China before anything else or force other countries to pick side. In the wake of the earthquake in Afghanistan and the economic difficulties in Sri Lanka, China has done its best to help and put credibility, the greater good and sincerity first, for we believe this is the way how neighbors should treat each other.
