Zhao Lijian With the concerted efforts of all parties, the seventh round of negotiations on resuming the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) kicked off in Vienna. Although there was no breakthrough in the negotiations, all parties showed a serious attitude and agreed to return to the JCPOA exactly as it is. On the basis of the text reached in the previous six rounds of negotiations, the parties held comprehensive and in-depth discussions on the lifting of sanctions and issues in the nuclear field, and the Iranian side proposed written amendments to the text in these two areas. These interactions help all parties to better understand the position of the new Iranian government.

Under the current circumstances, all parties should stick to the political direction of dialogue and negotiation, firmly maintain the momentum of negotiations, strive to expand consensus and push forward the negotiation process. It should be pointed out that finger-pointing and pressuring will lead nowhere. At present, the key is to focus on the pending issues, adopt a flexible and open attitude, show political wisdom, seek practical and feasible solutions, and strive to reach an agreement on resuming compliance with the JCPOA at an early date. As the one who started the Iranian nuclear crisis, the US should lift all illegal unilateral sanctions against Iran, China and other third parties, and Iran should resume fulfilling its nuclear commitments on this basis. In this process, all parties concerned should uphold fairness and justice, be rational and exercise restraint, and avoid drastic words and deeds that may disrupt diplomatic efforts.

The accommodation sites in Lithuania are in dire conditions, lack daily supplies and have limited access to medical service. They also reported Lithuania’s use of force, torture and ill-treatment against refugees and migrants, including gender-based violence, and collective expulsion of asylum-seekers including children without reviewing their individual situations.

The observations also pointed out that the conditions with regard to quality and quantity of food in some Lithuanian prison facilities continue to fall short of international standards, with frequent incidents of large-scale violence, drug trafficking, spread of HIV and other infectious diseases and the lack of timely access to medical treatment. They noted the use of force by the prison staff, including with tasers. Besides, Lithuania was complicit in the CIA’s secret extradition and detention program, in which torture and ill-treatment were excised but no investigation for substantive results has been conducted.

The Lithuanian government should heed the call of justice from the international community and earnestly reflect on its deplorable record on human rights. It should conduct timely, comprehensive and impartial investigations into the cases of ill-treatment and torture and take effective measures to safeguard human rights and basic rights.

Zhao Lijian China noted that the leadership of the Afghan interim government released the latest decree on safeguarding the rights and interests of women in marriage and household, pointing out that a woman is a noble and free human being, no one can give her to anyone as an exchange, and women should not be forced into marriage. The decree stresses that women shall not be oppressed or deprived of their legitimate rights. It also encourages efforts to raise public awareness of women’s rights, and encourages writers and activists to publish useful articles on women’s rights.
