据《华盛顿邮报》2019年报道，美国在年度新闻自由指数中的排名已经连续三年下降。据“美国新闻自由追踪系统”统计，仅2019年美国就发生28起记者被拒绝参加政府公开活动的事件。今年以来，美国已经发生223起针对记者的袭击事件，73名记者被逮捕，仅在“黑人的命也是命”抗议示威活动中就有超过868起侵犯新闻自由的案件。美国《纽约时报》《国会山报》和英国《卫报》等媒体都曾报道过上述活动中记者遭袭和被捕的新闻。仅2020年5月26日至6月2日期间，就有148名记者被殃及。其中，40名记者遭子弹射击，34名记者遭警察人身攻击，33名记者被逮捕或拘留，甚至一名女摄影记者左眼被橡胶子弹击中，导致永久性失明。今年1月，美国全国公共广播电台披露称，美国国务卿蓬佩奥因对该台一名女记者的提问不满，当场对其发表挑衅和蔑视的“人身攻击”，并将该台粗暴移除出他的随行出访媒体清单。美国政府对于不符合自身喜好的新闻报道，便斥之为“假新闻”，对此相信《纽约时报》等美国媒体早已深有体会。英国《卫报》援引美国媒体评论称，本届美国政府“对新闻自由进行了有史以来最持久的攻击”。
Washington Post reported in 2019 that the United States’ ranking on the list of world press freedom index had been dropping for three consecutive years. According to U.S. Press Freedom Tracker, in 2019 alone, there were 28 instances in the United States where journalists were denied access to the government’s public events. This year saw 223 assaults against journalists in the United States and 73 arrests of journalists. In the “Black Lives Matter” demonstrations, there were over 868 cases in violation of press freedom. Such assaults and arrests were reported by New York Times, The Hill, The Guardian and other media agencies. From May 26 to June 2 this year, 148 journalists had such experience. Forty journalists were shot by bullets, 34 physically assaulted by the police, 33 arrested or detained, and one female photographer even shot by a rubber bullet in the left eye, which led to permanent vision loss. NPR revealed in January this year that Secretary of State Pompeo launched personal attacks full of provocation and contempt against an NPR journalist whose question he didn’t like, and removed NPR from the media team traveling with him on a trip abroad. The U.S. government calls all news reports that they dislike “fake news”, of which I believe New York Times and other American media have a deep understanding. The Guardian cited an American host that this U.S government has launched the most sustained attack on press freedom in the country's history.

Considering their wanton interference in domestic and foreign journalists’ reporting, as well as their unwarranted smears and oppression against journalists, if we are seriously discussing press freedom, the United States itself is the perpetrator that blatantly suppresses media and restricts press freedom. Its self-proclaimed image of a “beacon” exists in name only .

Zhao Lijian O’Brien is judg ing China’s intentions by the United States’ own mindset. His claim is ignorant of history and reality, full of strong ideological bias and the Cold-War mentality. By hyping up ideological confrontation, a small group of U.S. politicians are trying to drag the world into a new Cold War. It is against the trend of the times to revive McCarthyism, an unpopular act that is doomed to fail.
