Zhao Lijian China’s economy growth in the first three quarters of this year achieved positive growth, which is a hard-won, remarkable result considering the spreading pandemic and the weakened world economy. It fully demonstrates the strong resilience in the Chinese economy.
我也注意到一些外媒将此解读为，中国经济复苏已经由工业领域向消费领域扩展，这将为提振世界总需求注入更大动力。我有两个例子和大家分享。一个是汽车。根据德国《商报》报道，今年第三季度，奔驰汽车在华销量同比增长超过23％，盈利占企业总盈利1/3以上；宝马在华销量同比增长30％；奥迪则实现了自32年前进入中国市场以来的最佳表现。另一个是电影票房。据有关机构统计，中国国庆期间票房收入达到近40亿元人民币。今年以来中国票房收入已超过20亿美元，首次超过北美。这再次证明，中国14亿人口所形成的超大规模市场优势和巨大内需潜力，将为中国和全球经济增长提供更有韧性、更具活力、更可持续的发展动能。
I also noticed some foreign media comments that China’s economic recovery has expanded from industry to consumption, injecting greater impetus in world demand. I have two examples to share with you. The first one is about automobiles. According to Handelsblatt, in the third quarter this year, Mercedes-Benz sales in China grew by 23 percent year on year, the profits of which accounted for over one third of the company’s total. BMW’s sales in China achieved 30-percent growth year on year. Audi has had the best performance since entering the Chinese market 32 years ago. The second example is about box office sales. According to statistics, China’s box office sales during the National Day holiday totaled almost RMB 4 billion. This year, China’s box office sales of over $2 billion surpassed that of North America for the first time. It proves once again that with 1.4 billion population, China’s huge market and great potential of domestic demand will generate more resilient, vibrant and sustainable impetus for Chinese and world economic growth.
当前，中国正在构建以国内大循环为主体、国内国际双循环相互促进的新发展格局，在重要领域和关键环节也将继续推出更多改革举措。中方将进一步扩大内需，扩大对外开放，同世界更多分享中国的发展红利。

People’s Daily You said at previous press conferences that the United States has been monitoring, harassing, interrogating and arresting Chinese students in the United States, as well as seizing their electronic devices. Can you share more details on that?
赵立坚一段时间以来，美方动用司法力量，任意对中国在美留学生进行滋扰盘查，甚至捏造罪名进行抓捕和起诉。多名中国留学生在美国机场离境时受到美执法人员长时间滋扰，他们的手机、电脑等物品被任意检查甚至被扣留。仅今年5月至9月初，就有近300名中国留学人员在搭乘临时航班离开机场时被美方滋扰盘查。
Zhao Lijian For some time the United States has been using judicial power to wantonly harass and interrogate Chinese students there, and even arrest and prosecute them under false allegations. Multiple Chinese students underwent long-time harassment by U.S. law enforcement personnel at the airport when they were leaving the country. Their cell phones, laptops and other personal belongings were arbitrarily examined and even seized. This year, from May to September alone, nearly 300 Chinese students experienced U.S. harassment and interrogation at the airport when they were to take interim flights.
美方上述行为充分暴露了其所谓保护人权的虚假面目，严重侵害中国在美留学人员合法权益，严重破坏中美正常人文交流和教育合作，中方对此予以强烈谴责。我们已向美方多次提出严正交涉，敦促美方纠正错误，停止针对中国留学人员的歧视性行为。中方将继续采取一切必要措施，维护中国公民的合法权益。
The U.S. behaviors explicitly reveal their hypocrisy in so-called “protection of human rights”. China strongly condemns these behaviors as they seriously violate Chinese students’ lawful rights and interests, and severely undermine people-to-people exchange and educational cooperation. We lodged solemn representations with the U.S. side many times, urging it to correct mistakes and stop discriminatory behaviors against Chinese students. China will continue taking all necessary measures to safeguard Chinese citizens’ legitimate rights and interests.

China enjoys traditional friendly relations with Laos, Montenegro and Pakistan, so Mr. Pompeo, why not stop wasting energy?
