党之所以能够领导人民在一次次求索、一次次挫折、一次次开拓中完成中国其他各种政治力量不可能完成的艰巨任务，根本在于坚持解放思想、实事求是、与时俱进、求真务实，坚持把马克思主义基本原理同中国具体实际相结合、同中华优秀传统文化相结合，坚持实践是检验真理的唯一标准，坚持一切从实际出发，及时回答时代之问、人民之问，不断推进马克思主义中国化时代化。

The fundamental reason why the Party has been able to lead the people through painstaking searches, setbacks, and pioneering efforts to accomplish enormous tasks that were inconceivable for any other political force in China is its commitment to the following: freeing minds, seeking truth from facts, advancing with the times, and applying a realistic and pragmatic approach; adapting the basic tenets of Marxism to China’s specific realities and China’s fine traditional culture; abiding by the principle that practice is the sole criterion for testing truth; and grounding all its efforts in reality. Furthermore, the Party has provided prompt answers to the questions of our times and our people, and kept adapting Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of our times.

——马克思主义是我们立党立国、兴党兴国的根本指导思想。江泽民同志留给我们的最可宝贵的财富，就是“三个代表”重要思想。他表示：“我提出这个问题，是经过了长时期思考的。”“‘三个代表’的思想，不是凭空产生的，而是我们十三年来在理论和实践上不断探索和开拓的结果。”“三个代表”重要思想是党必须长期坚持的指导思想。新征程上，我们一定要坚持把马克思主义基本原理同中国具体实际相结合、同中华优秀传统文化相结合，坚持一切从实际出发，不断回答中国之问、世界之问、人民之问、时代之问，始终保持马克思主义的蓬勃生机和旺盛活力。

Marxism is the fundamental guiding ideology, on which our Party and country are founded and thrive. The most valuable asset that Comrade Jiang has left us is the Theory of Three Represents. "I raised this theory after a long period of reflection," he said. "The Theory of Three Represents did not come out of thin air, but out of our constant exploration and pioneering in theory and practice over the past 13 years." The Theory of Three Represents is the guiding principle that the Party must uphold for a long time to come. On our new journey, we must continue to adapt the basic tenets of Marxism to China's specific realities and fine traditional culture. We must proceed from reality in all matters, and constantly respond to the questions posed by China, by the world, by the people and by the times, so as to maintain the vigor and vitality of Marxism.

第二，坚持解放思想，实事求是，与时俱进，求真务实。党的思想路线是一切从实际出发，理论联系实际，实事求是，在实践中检验真理和发展真理。全党必须坚持这条思想路线，积极探索，大胆试验，开拓创新，创造性地开展工作，不断研究新情况，总结新经验，解决新问题，在实践中丰富和发展马克思主义，推进马克思主义中国化时代化。

2. Commitment to emancipating the mind, seeking truth from facts, advancing with the times, and being realistic and pragmatic. The Party’s line of thinking is to proceed from reality in all it does, to integrate theory with practice, to seek truth from facts, and to verify and develop truths through practice. All Party members must uphold this line of thinking, actively exploring and boldly experimenting, breaking ground and making innovations, and working with creativity; never cease to study new situations, reflect on new experiences, and solve new problems; and enrich and develop Marxism through practice and advance the adaption of Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of our times.

坚持和发展马克思主义，必须同中国具体实际相结合。我们坚持以马克思主义为指导，是要运用其科学的世界观和方法论解决中国的问题，而不是要背诵和重复其具体结论和词句，更不能把马克思主义当成一成不变的教条。我们必须坚持解放思想、实事求是、与时俱进、求真务实，一切从实际出发，着眼解决新时代改革开放和社会主义现代化建设的实际问题，不断回答中国之问、世界之问、人民之问、时代之问，作出符合中国实际和时代要求的正确回答，得出符合客观规律的科学认识，形成与时俱进的理论成果，更好指导中国实践。

To uphold and develop Marxism, we must integrate it with China’s specific realities. Taking Marxism as our guide means applying its worldview and methodology to solving problems in China; it does not mean memorizing and reciting its specific conclusions and lines, and still less does it mean treating it as a rigid dogma. We must continue to free our minds, seek truth from facts, move with the times, and take a realistic and pragmatic approach. We must base everything we do on actual conditions and focus on solving real problems arising in our reform, opening up, and socialist modernization endeavors in the new era. We must keep responding to the questions posed by China, by the world, by the people, and by the times; in doing so, we should find the right answers suited to the realities of China and the needs of our day, reach conclusions that are compatible with objective laws, and develop new theories that are in step with the times, so as to provide better guidance for China’s practice.
