Wang Wenbin With President Richard Nixon’s visit to China 50 years ago, China and the US had a historic handshake and ended the long estrangement between the two countries. The Shanghai Communiqué issued during the visit is the first joint communiqué between China and the US. It affirmed the one-China principle, which, along with the principles of respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states, non-aggression against other states, non-interference in the internal affairs of other states, equality and mutual benefit, and peaceful coexistence, constitutes the political foundation of normalization of relations and the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
当前中美关系遭遇的问题，根本原因在于美方一些人对华认知出了严重偏差，将中国作为主要战略竞争对手甚至“假想敌”进行全方位遏制。我想强调，中国发展只是想让中国人民过上更好的生活，不是为了挑战或取代美国，美方也不应寻求改变甚至打压中国。中美两国共同利益远大于分歧，双方合则两利、斗则俱伤。两国之间有分歧矛盾在所难免，关键是通过坦诚沟通加以有效管控，防止战略误判，避免冲突对抗。
The root cause of the current problems in China-US relations is that some people in the US, based on seriously misguided perception of China, regard China as a major strategic competitor or even an “imaginary enemy” and want to contain China in all dimensions. I want to stress that China’s development only aims to provide a better life for the Chinese people, not to challenge or replace the US. The US side should not seek to change or even suppress China. The two countries have far more common interests than differences. Both countries stand to gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation. It is inevitable that there will be differences between us. The key is to conduct candid communication to effectively manage those differences, prevent strategic miscalculation and avoid conflict and confrontation.
“上海公报”发表暨尼克松访华50周年带给人们的重要启示是，只要坚持相互尊重、求同存异、合作共赢，就能扩大共同利益，实现不同社会制度和发展道路国家和平共处。希望美方同中方一道，从过去50年的历史中汲取经验和智慧，传承、发扬“上海公报”精神，共同推动中美关系重回健康稳定发展轨道。
An important inspiration from the Shanghai Communiqué and the 50th anniversary of President Nixon’s visit to China is that countries with different social systems and development paths can well expand common interests and coexist peacefully as long as they adhere to mutual respect, seek common ground while shelving differences and pursue win-win cooperation.
