Zhao Lijian On November 20, the Karot hydropower project, the first of its kind under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), successfully closed the gates of the diversion tunnels, starting reservoir impoundment. I would like to extend congratulations. While working in the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan, I paid many visits to the Karot hydropower project. Now around 95 percent of the project has been completed. Once put into operation, the hydropower project is expected to generate some 3.2 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually, reducing 3.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year. It will not only provide stable and affordable energy and help optimize Pakistan's energy supply structure, but will also help the country on its way to realize sustainable development.
